Blood Pressure

Pressure of anything means the force or speed to do any task. Similarly blood pressure (BP) refers to the force with which the blood flows in our body. We can measure the blood pressure in two numbers, that is, a higher number and a lower number.
When the heart beats while pumping blood, it is known as systolic pressure, which is the higher number.
When the heart is at rest between two beats, it is known as diastolic pressure, which is the lower number.
Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury, or mmHg. The normal range for an adult is a Systolic pressure of equal to or less than 120 and Diastolic pressure of equal to or less than 80 i.e. 120/80 mmHg.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is also known as Hypertension. If your Systolic pressure is above 140 mmHg or the Diastolic pressure is above 90 mmHg, it means that you are having High BP and this indicates a risk for your heart. In such cases, you should consult your doctor and should start taking a personalized diet prescribed by an expert to reduce the High BP.

Treatment for High BP

  • Reduce salt in your food
  • Include fruits and vegetables in your diet
  • Start aerobics or other exercises as prescribed by your doctor
  • Reduce the amount of alcohol intake
  • Reduce your weight if you are overweight
  • If your lifestyle has been sedentary, change to a move active lifestyle

Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure is also known as Hypotension. If your systolic pressure is less than 90 mmHg and the diastolic pressure is less than 60 mmHg i.e 90/60mmHg or less, it means you have a low blood pressure. Though low BP does not have the same risks as in case of a high BP, it may affect anyone. Some of the symptoms of low BP are:

  • nausea
  • blurred vision
  • weakness
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • Depression
  • Clammy skin

Although low BP is not risky, you should not take it lightly and keep a record if you are having low BP frequently.
In both cases of high and low BP, it is necessary to take care of your diet and exercise regularly. If the symptoms persist, you should immediately consult an expert without wasting any time.
